Son of Jim Lowndes (25 years a road construction foreman) and Margaret Willey, married at 16. Eldest son of six and seven sisters, six surviving. Father of 4, three surviving. 9 grand children. Left school at 12 joining the local postal service. Apprentice baker in Winchelsea and baker throughout Victoria.
